Waimea Spinyback Riesling
Harvest 2014 was notable for the excellent quality of fruit produced, thanks to a season that was warm and dry for Nelson. Excellent concentration of flavours and ripeness levels were reached several weeks earlier than expected, resulting in an early start to harvesting in the second week of March.
Fortuitously this meant that when more than 200mm of rain hit the upper South mid-April our fruit was now juice, happily fermenting in the winery.
Our Spinyback Riesling 2014 has a lifted nose of jasmine, citrus blossom and green apple. Just a hint of residual sweetness nicely balances this wine’s bright acidity and mineral character. In the mouth this wine is plumped by the fore mentioned apple character and the palate coated by the chalky minerality. The juicy acidity and light spritz creating a long and refreshing finish.
Lower in alcohol - this excellent lunchtime wine or a fresh accompaniment to light evening meals.

The grapes for this Riesling are from our Annabrook vineyard. It surrounds the winery and is on the Waimea Plains’ stony free-draining alluvial soils. The fruit was first on the harvest schedule on the 13th April and arrived at the winery very early in the morning and icy cold. Quickly processed to the press, the fruit was gently pressed and cold settled to achieve a well clarified juice.
This juice was then inoculated with yeast isolated in Portugal. It was chosen for its ability to produce fresh fruit focused wines and the ability to maximise varietal expression. The ferment was carefully managed to ensure the pure fruit characters were retained and the ferment was then arrested when the wine appeared balanced - with just a dash of residual sugar. The wine was then stabilized and crossflow filtered for bottling.
